In the last few years, MEAN WELL released multiple HVDC product lines for various applications in the fields of new energy applications: green energy, energy saving, energy storage, and smart industry fields, such as photovoltaic power generation, energy storage, wind power generation, and other related applications. This article shares two HVDC applications: Solar Tracker and Class 4 Power System (Fault Management Power System, FMPS).

1. Solar Tracker – Solar power plane generates Mega Watts of power by large scale of solar arrays voltage at 1000~1500Vdc. To maximize the power generation, the high voltage 1000~1500Vdc often uses as main supply to turn the solar arrays to track the solar. MEAN WELL RSDH-150 and RSDH-300 HVDC input DC-to-DC power supply is the solution for Solar Tracker to step down the 1000~1500Vdc High Voltage to power a motor to position the solar arrays and to charge a battery to reset the solar array position after sunset. Moreover, the RSDH-150/300 semi-encapsulated and -40°C operational are two other features suitable for outdoor installation.

2. Class 4 Power System (FMPS) – Fault-Managed Power Systems consist of a fault-managed power transmitter and a fault-managed power receiver connected by a cabling system. These systems are characterized by monitoring the circuit for faults and controlling the power transmitted to ensure the energy and power delivered into any fault is limited. Figure 2 illustrates the FMPS system along with powered devices by the Receiver.

The advantage of Class 4 Power System over AC power is lower installation cost by not requiring conduit to enclose a thousand feet of power cable, remote monitoring/control and expandable. To reduce voltage and power loss over long distances, Class 4 Power System utilizes HVDC at 350~360Vdc at the Transmitter Input and Receiver Output. MEAN WELL HVDC input and output power supplies play a significant role for Class 4 Power System. For instance, the 260V~400Vdc output NCP-3200-380 scalable rack solution is used to supply power to the Class 4 Transmitters. The high input voltage 250~1500Vdc DDRH-240 & RSDH-300 series can step down the Class 4 Receiver output to power low voltage devices such as PoE.

In summary, MEAN WELL HVDC power supplies provide immediate solutions for both Solar Tracker and Class 4 Power System Applications that the RSDH/DDRH series step down the High Voltage to power low voltage devices and the NCP series converts AC to High Voltage DC to power the Transmitters.
